The Mahanadi Coal Limited (MCL) proposes to start the construction of a state-of-the-art medical college and hospital in Talcher district of Odisha. Since all the requisite formalities for the process have been completed, the construction is likely to begin in the near future.
MCL, which is a subsidiary of Coal Indian Limited and the second largest producer of coal in the state of Odisha, has always made efforts for the upliftment of the state. In this regard, it has laid down the foundation of the CSR Project, which is going to set up a 100 seat medical college along with a 500 bed hospital in Talcher and the estimated budget of the project will be nearly Rs 492 crore.
The company has already completed the construction related formalities, for which the National Building Construction Corporation, a Central PSU under the Union Ministry of Urban Development, has been deployed to take up the project.
A Memorandum of Understanding had been signed between the state and MCL in March 2014. The project is likely to be completed by 2016.
The state of Odisha already has three stare run medical colleges, which are located at Cuttack, Berhampur University and Sambalpur. Five more medical colleges have been approved by the Center at Puri, Balasore, Koraput, Bolangir and Baripada.
Since the state has been facing huge shortage of qualified doctors in the recent times, the government has decided to fulfill this gap by setting up more medical colleges in the state.
