Bhubaneswar: The delay in establishment of a medical college in the town proposed by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited has led to separate economic blockades by two civil society bodies in Talcher.
The Talcher Surakhya Manch will begin an economic blockade by halting mining activities and some services from July 14. On the other hand, a blockade has been called by Talcher Bar Association in Talcher industrial belt from July 28.
In a recent meeting, the bodies have taken a decision in this regard on account of deliberate delay in the process on the behalf of the company. On the other hand, it has been said by PC Panigrahi, Director (Personnel), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, said in the defense of the company that all necessary procedures for setting up the Rs 492-crore college have been completed.
He further stated, “The possession of land after forest clearance was received in March, which caused unprecedented delay in the work. We have finished the official procedures related to allocation of the construction contract, which has been allotted to National Building Construction Corporation Ltd, a Central Government undertaking. As a result, getting involved in such useless agitation would cause loss to the project as well as the country.” The college is expected to be completed by 2016.
There are already three state run medical colleges in the state, which are located at Cuttack, Berhampur and Sambalpur. Five more of them will be upgraded at Puri, Bolangir, Balsore, Baripada and Koraput.
