Bhubaneswar: A total of nine people were killed and 23 injured when lightning struck different parts of Odisha on Tuesday afternoon. According to reports from Jagatsinghpur, lightning claimed three lives and injured three others critically at Nimakala, which comes under Tirtol police limits.
In another incident in Kendrapada, Sankarshan Mallick (59), of Gogua under the Mahakalapada police station was killed when lightning struck him while coming home from his field. In Pattamundai, a 15-year-old youth was seriously injured. Yet another case was reported in Ali, where two young men were injured. One of them was injured because of bursting of his mobile as lightning struck.
In a freak incident at Pattamundai Government Girls’ High School, 15 students fell ill as they were struck by lightning while in the classrooms. They were taken to the Pattamundai CHC. A 45 year old agricultural worker, Dhuleswar Sethy was killed in Cuttack was killed on the spot, when lightning struck him while he working in his paddy field at Dikshitpada under Nischintkoili block.
A 64 year old farmer from Remanda under the Lakhanpur police station fell victim to the same situation while returning home. Other tow deaths were reported, that of a girl from Sathibakuda under Chandbali block and a labourer from Bideipurpala under the Basudevpur police.
A similar and unfortunate case was reported in Patilo village under Anandpur block in Keonjhar district. Two people in Bhubaneswar suffered serious injuries in the lightning incident.
